Google launched Made w/ Code in June 2014 with one goal – to inspire a new generation of girl coders. Nexus Interactive Arts was tasked by Red&Co and Google to design and build 8 unique and different projects for the madewithcode website that would amaze, inspire and encourage young girls to explore the possibilities of coding.
Google and 72andSunny LA got in touch to discuss making one more very special project...
For the 92nd Annual National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony at the President’s Park in Washington, on December 4th 2014, young girls were able to code their own Christmas tree lighting design which was shown on the 56 Christmas trees in front of The White House.
Working with Google and 72andSunny in LA, Nexus Interactive Arts with Director, Evan Boehm, created the website and light installation programme, enabling young girls from the comfort of their homes, to code their own unique light design, using an intuitive programming language called Blockly. The girls were empowered to alter the colour, pattern and movement of the lights to create their own Christmas light show and once created, the designs were then uploaded onto one of the 56 trees, each representing a different US state or territory.
