Feasting season is upon us. As the US celebrates Thanksgiving and Christmas is fast approaching, we’re taking a look at the emotional pull food has on us in this series of films, from changing perceptions of animal and farmer welfare, to the connection certain meals have with home to just watching a lovable dog thoroughly enjoy his food. Johnny Kelly | A Future Begins
First up, we’re looking at Johnny Kelly’s purpose-driven short for Chipotle released a decade ago, highlighting the need for ethical, sustainable farming in the food industry. The charming stop-motion moment changed the global conversation around animal welfare with a subsequent move towards crate-free farming. In ‘Back to the Start’, Johnny’s lovable puppet family switches first to factory farming, then back to the sustainable approach of turning animals out to pasture.

A heart-warming story of one man’s love life as seen through the eyes of his best friend and dog, Winston, revealed bite by bite through the meals they share. The piece is so well-known in popular culture it was parodied in an episode of The Simpsons.

Siqi crafts this appetising stop-motion short film, with hand-crafted details that look good enough to eat. The Coin is a story about identity, family and immigration and built on a Chinese New Year’s Tradition which sees coins being hidden inside dumplings for good luck.
