Fantasista Utamaro
Took us on a technicolour trip of mashed up manga-style, Gameboy-inspired and psychedelic imagery for a water-coloured cut-out Pharell; created a vast mesmeric kaleidoscopic universe for the “queen of kawaii” and sent us tumbling into an Alice in Wonderland-esque world…..
Fantasista Utamaro is part of a new generation of young Japanese artists who are challenging the traditional boundaries of art. Born in Japan and based in Brooklyn, he works as a director, illustrator, art director and graphic designer. His distinct style explores the concepts of celebration, limitlessness and freedom through an explosion of energetic technicolour. He recently collaborated with Pharrell Williams on his music promo, ‘It Girl’, often collaborates with Takashi Murakami and last year had his work exhibited at the Urban Art Fair in Paris.
